“Creating Sustainable Ecosystems” is a low-fidelity prototype for an eLearning module created to teach middle school learners the principles of ecosystem balance, sustainability, and critical thinking. This (mockup) module my process for planning meaningful, standards-aligned digital learning experiences that are accessible, engaging, and instructionally sound.
The module invites students to build a virtual ecosystem using drag-and-drop interactions, clickable diagrams, formative assessments, and guided reflection prompts. Designed using Canva for the storyboard and visual layout, the module follows the ADDIE model, applies Bloom’s Taxonomy, and incorporates Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles throughout.
Key features include:
A clickable ecosystem diagram to introduce system components
An interactive simulation where learners build their own ecosystem
Knowledge checks with instant feedback
A reflective writing prompt for learner expression
Visually clear layouts with strong contrast, aligned visuals, and generous white space to reduce cognitive load
Built-in error tolerance and usability scaffolding to promote confidence and experimentation
In parallel with the design, I developed a usability testing plan targeting clarity, accessibility, and learner engagement. The plan includes observation strategies (e.g., think-aloud), short feedback surveys, and a protocol for incorporating revisions based on learner input.
What I’m most proud of in this project is how the instructional design, content strategy, and user experience work together to support diverse learning styles and promote self-regulation, critical thinking, and real-world application. Though the prototype is not yet interactive, it is fully mapped out and ready for development in a tool such as Adobe Captivate or Articulate Storyline.
🎯 Design Goals:
Support NGSS-aligned science learning through inquiry and collaboration
Promote critical thinking and structured problem solving
Deliver instruction using UDL, Mayer’s multimedia principles, and accessibility best practices
🧠 Tools & Frameworks Used:
Canva (storyboard/mockup)
ADDIE model
Bloom’s Taxonomy
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Multimedia learning principles (Mayer, 2005)
📍 Status: Prototype/mockup
